Methodology: Domain registration and renewal prices

Domain registration and renewal prices

Conditions

What we track. For each registrar and domain extension we follow, two prices: registering a standard, non-premium domain for one year, and renewing it for one year, as the registrar's own public price list shows them.

What counts as a value. The active price the page shows for that exact extension and term, in the page's currency (US dollars or euros per year), with the date we read it. A crossed-out price is never taken as a renewal price, and transfer prices are not used. We do not convert currencies.

What it is not. A list price, not a checkout total and not a promise of next year's renewal price. Where the page says whether tax or registry fees are included, we say so; where it does not, we do not assume either way. Prices can also differ by the buyer's country and by promotion.

When a value is Unknown. When the page shows no price for that exact extension and one-year term — for example, an extension sold only for two years or more (we do not divide a multi-year charge) — or the price cannot be tied to it without doubt. A value we have not recorded is shown as Unknown, never as zero.

How often. Every registrar–extension pair is read once a day.

Domain Renewal Premium Watch. The median of (renewal ÷ registration − 1) × 100 across the .com, .io and .ai pairs read on the same date in the same currency; each pair counts once, and .ai offers sold only for two years or more are left out. We show the date and the number of pairs (N) with it. It describes the pairs we track, not the whole market.
